If i see a riki i'd just pick a spirit breaker.

the point is not to let him farm :) and just end it fast
also dont show your back to him. riki doesnt hit THAT hard for a carry, its just that his passive is scary. if you dont let it proc you should be fine.
counter hero picks are bounty and slardar since both hero ults give true vision. item counters r dust of appearance (gives true vision for a few seconds so even if an invis hero leaves sentry ward area u can still see him), sentry wards (true vision in a small area), gem (be careful not to die with this cuz it will drop and if he picks it up or his team does then they can destroy all wards). Also spirit breaker is good but he must have dust with him at all times cuz when he charges he has true vision until he hits the target so pop dust when u hit riki.
other than that just try to read the play style of enemy players in your lane. if riki hits lvl 6 and you have not seen him on map for a couple mins, and ur enemy heros in lane are playing aggressive trying to pick a fight then he is probably there waiting till ur out of tower range.

I count myself as a decent Riki player. Depending on what your role is, your best bet is going to be items. SB and dust(as mentioned above) is particularly potent just because he can lock Riki down with an unending stream of stuns. But one of the things that is underutilized, is the Monkey King Bar. The MKB lets a carry go toe-to-toe with Riki under the cloud. Which means 1) your carry isn't showing their back.. thus taking less damage. And 2) the MKB lets them ignore that 70% mis-rate. I've played alot of games where carries choose to go more traditional builds instead of adapting to the competition.
A few other things-Always have sentry wards or dust(if not a gem.. though you would want that on your own high damage ganker so you can try and shut Riki down) and be conscious of where the cloud is placed. Alot of times Riki's will center it, but sometimes they will try to lead you by placing the edge on a hero and the majority of it between the hero and "safety". Walking through the entire cloud to get to safety will just lead to you dying. Have a better chance stepping out of it, dropping your sentry, and going toe-to-toe. The invisibility is nice on Riki.. but it's the cloud that is his best ability, imo.
Force staff also defeats the cloud, thus letting supports escape ganks.
Another thing to keep in mind.. Riki doesn't usually get alot of health. Evasion and high armor through lots and lots of agility is the normal build.
Necronomicon summoned warrior has True Sight (at least at lv 3). It's also a really good pushing item, nice INT/STR gain too.
Just be aggressive in lane, honestly.
Whenever I play Riki (rarely nowadays), my biggest nightmare is an enemy that wants to fight right from the get go. From levels 1-4, Riki CANNOT man fight anyone, as pretty much any str hero or nuker will do more damage to Riki than Riki will inflict.
Attack him a lot, bully him out of lane, and buy some dust later.
And no, this isnt easier said than done. Just right click him, he will run away.

There are ways to counter riki but sadly with a determined behind him its tough and same with PL, you can shut him down but when there are 4 other heroes to worry about its not always the case.
Map was warded to shit, bought a couple gems, team ganked him but he went vlads and jungled quite a bit.
riki isn't a bottom tier hero, he still sees some play in competitive (although notably by only a few teams, alliance being one of them).
a good riki player isn't very easily countered by sentries or dust. a good riki player will gank enough to force the sentries in the opponent jungle then return to farming his side of the map. juking and choosing the correct time to enter a team fight will also make it very hard for enemies to counter you.
If you can't edge him out in lane before he hits 6, supports should go for eul's/forcestaff/ghost scepter, all 3 of which let you kite him even in smoke. Do note that ghost scepter is purgable, so if he does go for Diffusal you might want to change your mind. Carries can go for either BKB or MKB, allowing them to manfight and take away his biggest advantage. The hardest part, however, is that the whole team needs to pull it off - else the carry might just try to fight while Riki eats away the supports at the back, leaving the carry 1v4.
-Force Staff out the cloud to unsilence yourself and to remove the miss chance
-Ghost Scepter yourself to prevent him attacking you for 4 seconds
-Place Sentries while laning if he's level 6
-Harass him out the lane before he gets 6
-Gank him frequently e.g. Spirit Breaker + dust
-Stand and fight rather than being backstabbed. Backstab is like half his source of damage.
-Use dust while ganking to also slow him down
-Give a Slardar or Bounty Hunter a Gem so they can Amplify Damage / Track him even when he's invisible
-Push towers early, force him to fight. Place a sentry behind you while pushing if Riki decides to defend the tower
U could slardar but meh only a few plays slardar but he's a great counter amplify then stun hit hit hit then dead :D
Force staff as a support bkb as a ganker or a carry.
Bkb makes his smoke do nothing to you, so as soon as he pops out on you bkb and man fight him.
If you are support just forcestaff-> tp
or just tp... he has no stun to stop you tping

I love it when I see people going "WOW CHECK OUT THIS GAME I GOT SO MANY KILLS TOO PRO". The game went for over an hour and you had 500 tower damage. If you had played well and pushed with your team, the game would have been over in half that time. Instead you drew it out and farmed heroes.

^^^^ Riki is really strong hero which shits on supports, what do you do at 15-20 min in as a support. Riki jumps you or a carry they are dead in 80% of the cases. By that time you barely have arcanes and wand. You can spend money on sentries but you cant put them on every lane (I only use them on mid and during push), dust he will just use diffusal and if u die with gem you are royally fucked. Riki owns Naix, all blink heros, AM and so forth. Say what you want I think hes really strong hero.
